🇪🇹 Ethiopia Technology News: Digital Transformation Accelerates in 2026

Werabe, Ethiopia — September 2026

Ethiopia's technology sector is entering a period of rapid expansion, with telecommunications, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital payments, and digital public services becoming increasingly important parts of the country's economy.

📡 Ethio Telecom expands 4G, 5G and digital services

Ethio Telecom has announced its 2026/27 business plan, with a focus on expanding connectivity and moving beyond traditional telecommunications toward digital and technology services.

The company plans to increase 4G capacity, expand 5G sites, extend fibre infrastructure and improve rural connectivity. Its plan targets 95% population coverage for 4G and an increase in 5G sites from 340 to 648. It also aims to connect more rural communities through additional mobile sites.

🤖 Artificial intelligence gains momentum

AI development is becoming an increasingly visible part of Ethiopia's technology ecosystem. In July, more than 300 developers, students and innovators participated in the Cursor Ethiopia AI Hackathon, developing AI solutions for areas including healthcare and service delivery.

☁️ AI-ready infrastructure and cloud computing

Ethio Telecom has also been discussing technology cooperation with international companies. Discussions with China's Inspur have included high-performance computing, AI-ready data centres, cloud computing, intelligent digital infrastructure, technology transfer and research and innovation. 📱 Competition in the telecommunications market

Ethiopia's telecom market is also expanding. Safaricom Ethiopia announced in September that it had passed 15 million 90-day active subscribers and built more than 3,500 network sites, with its network reaching approximately 60% of Ethiopia's population.

This expansion is increasing the availability of mobile connectivity and creating opportunities for digital services, mobile applications, fintech and online businesses.

🏛️ Digital government services

Technology is also being applied to government services. In April 2026, Ethio Telecom launched teleSign, a digital platform developed with government institutions to support services such as power-of-attorney processing, document authentication and lawyer licensing remotely. The system uses AI-based liveness detection and integrates with Ethiopia's Fayda digital ID infrastructure
